Bring Your Parent to School Day

Bring your parent to school day was a huge success! 54 parents attended the first annual Bring Your Parent to School Day. Parents met in the gym for breakfast and then had the opportunity to attend classes with their students, and a variety of workshops including college and career planning, creating and using a parent portal, tobacco use prevention, how to talk to your teen about drug & alcohol use, teaching your teen accountability/homework help and Friday Night Live Mentoring. If you were unable to attend this year's event, we hope you can attend next year's event. We'd like to thank our amazing parent club for all that they have done so far and for organizing this event. They have made a huge impact here at Calaveras High.

Independent Living Skills Class

The students in Mr. Outland’s Independent Living Skills class at Calaveras High will be participating in a daily classroom simulation this semester.  The simulation, called “Living On Your Own”, provides students with the opportunity to learn skills required for independent living in the community, including locating and acquiring employment, finding affordable housing, budgeting and money use, using local transportation resources, planning social and recreational activities, managing a household and identifying and solving potential problems and challenges while living in the community.

In past semesters, the setting for this simulation has been a fictional city.  However, during this semester the simulation will be set in Sacramento, and students will use actual community information resources to find work, transportation and goods and services, and will use real locations for housing, employment and recreation and leisure activities.

Among other specific  skills, students will practice interviewing for a job, keeping accurate checking and savings records, completing simple tax returns, comparison shopping and establishing life-time healthy eating habits, developing and adhering to a realistic budget, living with room-mates, and locating critical community information in phone-books, newspapers and transit schedules.

The Independent Living Skills class prepares students for successful living in the “real-world”, using functional curriculum (often taught in the community) which focuses on teaching those critical academic, self-help, social and community skills necessary for students to live as independently as possible after leaving the educational system.

Library News

ROP Medical    stethoscope

Current job market analysis demonstrates immediate openings for radiology techs and psych techs. The future demands for health care workers include all aspects of the field including nursing and information technology as increasing numbers of facilities convert medical records to computerized systems. Part-time as well as full-time workers usually qualify for medical and retirement benefits.

The ROP Medical Science Class is available to Calaveras County students during their senior year. Students in the ROP Medical Science Class will actively apply information and skills that are learned in the classroom; they train in REAL facilities, side-by-side REAL medical professionals, and deal with REAL patients.  They will experience the health care field first-hand and gain an understanding of medicine. The ROP Medical Science Class allows high school seniors to “try on” a medical career to see if medicine “fits” them while earning high school credits.

The class meets the UC elective requirement and participating students may earn college credit, and develop skills for a career in various medical fields including First Responders (EMT, Paramedic, and Fire Fighter), dental assisting, veterinary assisting, nursing, diagnostic services (radiology and laboratory), restorative services (physical therapy)and many other medical careers and support services.

Encourage your student to include the ROP Medical Science in his/her education plan—plan NOW so your student will be able to participate in the program during his/her senior year. Seats are limited.
