Student Discipline

·        Students are expected to be in their assigned desks, ready to work when the tardy bell rings. You will be considered tardy if you are not in your seat when the tardy bell starts to ring. After three tardies per quarter detention will be served.  (Detention will be served each and every time that you are tardy during a “tardy sweep”.)

·        Students must come to class prepared to work! Please bring to class everyday the following materials:

A) Notebook with your class notes & assignment calendars
B) Pencil or pen (standard blue or black ink only)
C) Completed homework assignment(s)
D) Binder paper
E) Textbook & Workbook (if you were issued one)

·        Food and drinks are not allowed at any time. (You may, however, bring and drink water from a clear, plastic container.)

·        Unauthorized communications, verbal or written, will not be tolerated.

·        Students may not leave the classroom for any reason without permission.  (Students are expected to take care of personal needs, bathroom, etc. during their break times or between classes.  If you need to use the restroom right before class, check in with the teacher first so that you are not considered tardy if you don’t make it back to class before the tardy bell.)

·        Dispose of trash and sharpen pencils before and after class, not during the period.  (Raise your hand to ask the teacher permission to leave your seat if you must do so during class.)

·        The teacher, not the bell, dismisses the class.  Students are only dismissed after all items of the “Dismissal Checklist” are completed.

·        If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up the missing assignments.  (See the “Make Up Page”.)

·        Treat people in a courteous and respectful matter.

·        All assignments to be turned in must be legible (neatly written) and have the following information in the upper, right-hand corner of the paper:

First and Last name
Date written in Spanish
Period

Academic Criteria

·        Quizzes are given frequently, often without advanced notice. These quizzes are based on preceding homework assignments, class discussions, notes and grammatical concepts studied.  (So make sure that you complete and KNOW your homework, pay close attention in class, and take thorough notes.)

·        Homework is to be completed before class. No late work will be accepted. (Exception: If you are absent, see the “Make Up Page” for instructions on how to make up your work and the time-lines.) Assignments will be made from the text, worksheets and notes. You will only receive credit for your homework if it is neatly completed beforehand and if you are actively participating in reviewing and correcting it. Students are required to keep an “assignment calendar” and an “objectives calendar” which will be inspected and graded periodically for completeness.

·        Upon arrival to class, students will fill out their objectives calendars and will have their homework out for inspection. (When the tardy bell rings, students should be doing this without being instructed by the teacher to do so.)

·        A unit test will be given at the end of each unit or chapter. There will be a comprehensive mid-term and final exam.

·        The class will be conducted in Spanish. If you need further explanations on material covered in class, the teacher will be available during study hall, before school, after school and during break. See the teacher to make arrangements. The teacher is not available during lunch.

·        Each student will be responsible for at least one oral project each quarter. These will consist of original conversations, skits and individual presentations. All work is to be done in Spanish.

Homework Policy

·        Homework in the foreign language department will be assigned daily. It is expected that the student spend at least one-half hour each day on homework and personal study. The reasons for homework are as follows:

-Vocabulary study (memorization)
-Independent practice of a new skill
-Writing assignments for the improvement of writing skills
-Reading in preparation for class discussion

·        The assignments will vary in quantity because of subject matter and level. The purpose of assigning homework is to provide students with the independent practice necessary to complete the student expectancies designated in the National Foreign Language Standards and in the California Language Learning Continuum.   A portion of your academic grade will be based upon your homework assignments.

The student will:

·        Use Spanish at all times.

Online Gradebook

Students and parents have 24 hour access to the teacher’s grade and attendance records. This is the best place to check to see how students are doing on homework, class participation, and on tests/quizzes. The online gradebook not only gives up to date information regarding grades and attendance but also provides personalized suggestions for each student on topics that need to be reviewed in order to improve in the class.

Assignment Calendars and lesson plans

If students are absent from class, they can check the online assignment calendars and lesson plans to see what they have to do in order to make up missed credit for their absences. The online assignment calendars also indicate when students should be prepared to take the next test/quiz.

Make up work and online assignments

If students are absent from class, especially for an extended period of time, they can stay caught up with the rest of the class. The make up area of the website informs students what they need to do in order to make up missed class time. It also provides the opportunity to complete and submit assignments online. The website also provides extra online assignments/activities for those who want to sharpen up particular skills.
