- Rail Road Flat School is the center of our
community and it has served the area for over 100 years. We are
proud of our heritage and excited about our future. Our motto is
"The Little School That Can." Parents, students, staff,
and community members work as a team.
-
- The community that we serve is
rural and isolated. Many of our students come from economically
challenged families and move frequently. Our small
community-oriented program fosters a sense of consistency for students who
may not have much stability. We work together to develop the talents
of each child. William Spady, a pioneer of performance-based
education reform made the following statement: "All Students can
learn and succeed, but not on the same day in the same way."
We believe a great school starts with
vision, sets high standards, builds on each child's strengths, and celebrates
every success. In 1944 Johnny Mercer wrote some simple lyrics:
"You better accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to
the affirmative, and don't you mess with Mr. In-between." In more
contemporary terms this means recognizing each child's strengths, helping
families overcome adversity, developing the skills and habits needed for
success, and never settling for mediocrity.
